Magic Use

In order for a person to use mana one must take the supernormal power, Magic Potential (MP).  Each level of mp cost two Gifts, you only need one level to cast spells, but if you make an error a level can be drained, temporarily. When you take mp you must also take a casting ability to label it. Example: Witchcraft, fairy magic, Sorcery, Astrology, etc. It should fit your culture or race.
 
After you have chosen your mp level and how you cast spells, you need to have a School of Magic. Schools help determine what kind of spells you can cast, kind of like a specialty. you can have more than one school if you want, and combine their effects.
 
Schools are based on magical schools that exist on Tellene. You can find a listing of them later. Schools are bought as Very Hard Skills, with a maximum of Fair. The skill can go higher than Fair with bonuses (LISTED LATER).
 
Every spell costs -1 to your Ego Attribute, due to mental strain, (SO  IF YOU HAD A EGO OF GOOD WHEN YOU CAST A SPELL YOUR EGO WOULD DECREASE TO FAIR AND SO ON FOR EACH SPELL YOU CAST). This is healed by sleep or perhaps magical means (BUT THEN SOMEONE ELSE IS OUT THE POINTS). If you go below Terrible you automatically fall asleep and do not wake until you are fully charged (EIGHT HOURS). If you want to sleep less than that or are woken up you cast all your spells that day at a -1 to your magic skill.
 
When you want to cast a spell explain it to the GM, or write it down, and the GM will assign a difficulty level. Subtract 1 from your Ego, add any appreciable modifiers to your skill level and then roll the dice. If you roll over the difficulty level; the spell happens as you described it, if you “just” achieved the difficulty level; You get a watered down version of the spell (SHORT DURATION, TIME LAG, ETC.). On a failed roll, you are stunned for a combat round and take a -2 to your Ego Attribute and the spell goes awry. If you roll a -4 (A FUMBLE) you automatically slip into a coma for at least a day and drain a level of mp for a week.
 
If you want to cast a spell and guarantee that it will work without rolling you can drain a level of mp. Someone with mp can still cast with a level of +0. If you go down to -1 mp though, you automatically go into a coma for one hour and when you awaken you must make a heath roll (GOOD DIFFICULTY) to remain conscious for the day and everyday that you are at -1 mp, you must make that roll to stay conscious. A level of mp is only healed by a week of rest (NO CASTING, NO ADVENTURING; JUST EATING, SLEEPING & STUDY).
 
MP & magic skill levels can be raised with experience just like everything else. Remember School Skills can only go up to Fair with experience.
