Character Descriptions
FANNY BRICE Very young woman without "showgirl" looks succeeds in "show business" with her brilliant comic timing, memorable characters and her lovely singing voice. Originally played by a 19 year old Barbra Streisand on Broadway in 1964. Actress must posses great comic timing and a SOCKO belt voice. She sings PEOPLE and DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE.
NICK ARNSTEIN Handsome 35-40 year old gambler, suave, well dressed, likable and charming. He can talk to anyone about anything. He sings far more in the play version than he did in the movie of FUNNY GIRL.
EDDIE RYAN Young singer and hoofer who become Fanny's mentor, best friend and sidekick. Gene Kelly-type who can sing and dance well..
MRS. BRICE Fanny's saloon-owning, wise-cracking and VERY loving Jewish mother. She is warm, sarcastic and quite wise. She sings quite a bit and even hoofs a little.
MRS. STRAKOSH, MRS. MEEKER, MRS. O' MALLEY Mrs. Brice's poker playing buddies who are skeptical of Fanny's chances in "showbiz." All sing. .
TOM KEENEY Theater owner who gives Fanny her first big break, after being tricked by Nick Arnstein to pay Fanny more than he had planned. Crusty, older show biz guy who has been around, but has a big heart.
EMMA Fanny's personal maid throughout her Ziegfeld days.
FLORENCE ZIEGFELD JR The "SHOWBUSINESS" man himself!! Not unlike the GOD of Broadway. Pompous, overbearing and ego-centric but a theatre genius who loves his performers and especially Fanny Brice.
ZIEGFELD TENOR Lead male singer in the Ziegfeld numbers.
MR. RENALDI Shady businessman who offers a deal to Nick that is too good to be true.
THE ENSEMBLE
Many speaking and singing roles. Mimsey, Polly, Jody, Jenny, John, Paul, Maude, Bubbles.
Stagehand, showgirls, workmen, male and female dancer, Henry St. Friends.
This is a very active ensemble!!
